Information on The Reading Center
The Reading Center is a powerful intervention that combines multiple research-based strategies to improve reading fluency. The entire web-based program is available and consists of 12 lessons for each of 5 levels. The complete 149 page manual is also available and contains all needed forms and materials. The program is web-based and can be used by students working from home or remotely.
Access to the Reading Center
Use of the Reading Center is free to subscribers to the iSTEEP Assessment and MTSS process. Contact iSTEEP support for additional information: www.isteep.com.
How Does it Work?
1.Students are assessed to determine their instructional level and students are placed in the appropriate “room” based on the assessment.
2.Students visit the Roomzster website and click on the appropriate room and complete a lesson. The lessons consist of the program reading a story to the student, asking the student to practice reading the story followed by a quiz on difficult words and a comprehension quiz.
3.After completing a lesson, the student reads to the teacher or reading helper. Based on the fluency score obtained, the student either proceeds to the next lesson or repeats the current lesson.
Who is the Program For?
The program is designed for students who have an instruction level of first through fifth grade. Students need to have an instructional level, as assessed by Oral Reading Fluency, of first grade or above with 70% accuracy. This program is not designed to teach non-readers to read. Instead, it is for students who are reading fairly accurately but slowly and need to improve reading fluency.
Uses of the Program
The Reading Center is easy to use because most of the implementation is done via the online system. The process does require that a one-minute reading test be given after completing a lesson. With a little review, the test can be administered by teachers, reading coaches and teaching assistants (with minimal training). For remote learners, the one minute assessment can be administered via Zoom or by a parent with some training and support. When the program is implemented as part of MTSS progress monitoring can be conducted with Oral Reading Fluency assessments.
Reading Center Available at No Cost during 2020-2021 School Year
We are deeply concerned about the historic levels of skill regression being observed. The problem is particularly acute for at-risk students and will likely cause the Achievement Gap to widen. The Reading Center is proven to enhance reading skills and will help at-risk students to improve markedly. In addition, the program may be used to mitigate skill loss in average readers.
About the Reading Center
The Reading Center was originally available in the form of printed materials and was downloaded approximately 450,000 times and used successfully with thousands of students. It was subsequently made available as a stand-alone computer program but that version was discontinued. The program was originally designed by Dr. Joseph Witt who was involved in with iSTEEP in bringing it to the web. Support for this site is provided by iSTEEP, a publisher of research based tools for implementing MTSS.
